The Waiting Game - Wednesday July 7th 2010 17:57:48
I hear people make statements like I will take that photo when I get this lens or that camera body. This is a self defeating exercise. Go out and shoot, make the most of the camera you own. I have a Canon XT(350D) from nearly 4 years ago. I use it every day, I don't tell myself I will get a certain photo later when I get a super wide angle or telephoto lens.

I have feet and use them to zoom in or out as needed for a shot if that's what it takes. Cameras and lenses don't take photos, people do, people with a creative vision.

Do not wait for that special piece of gear to get the shot you want, try to get it with what you have or borrow a lens from a good friend. Make the most of what you have and don't get overly fixated on the gear. Gadgets to have but just remember it's not worth having a camera if you don't use it for making great photos.

A New URL - Sunday July 4th 2010 1:43:23
I was looking for a new URL to register the other day and found one that I am rather surprised was not registered. I managed to get the phoc.us domain name. This is perfect for me since I am focusing on photography on my site.

Having a good url is important to branding and making it easy for people to find your work. I use the planetrobert.net domain for the site and will continue to run it that way but I will be using phoc.us as a short URL to give to people on cards or verbally. I can't remember how many times somebody has told me their URL and I had a hard time remembering it later because it was some words with their name in it and it was long. I think those vanity URLs are important to have but I also think it is equally important to have a short URL to be found at easily.

Look at your branding of your work and ask yourself if your URL is going to be easy for somebody find you at or are you going to lose traffic to a complicated URL. (more)
